Serie A record on hold

AC Milan captain Paolo Maldini will have to wait a little longer before beating Dino Zoff’s record of 570 appearances in Italy's top division. Maldini is currently on 570 appearances himself was expected to rack up the record tonight against Lazio. But coach Carlo Ancelotti has decided to rest Maldini, who has played three times in nine days.

So it looks like the record will have to wait until Sunday, when Milan face Treviso.
It’s all a long way from the time when Maldini made his debut for Milan in January 1985, in a 1-1 draw against Udinese, not many would have tipped a 20 year career with AC Milan, a time that has seen Milan pick up seven Serie A titles and crowned European champions four times.

He also holds the record for the number of appearances for the Italian national side with 126 and it could have been more had not the disappointment of Italy's elimination by South Korea at the 2002 World Cup forced him into retirement.
