Sivori, a legend passes away

Former European Footballer of the Year Omar Sivor, died yesterday from cancer of the pancreas, he was 69 years old. In an eventful life, that saw him play for both Italy and Argentina, under the less stringent rules of the day, he picked up a host of awards. Beginning his career at River Plate, he won two Argentine championships and was capped 18 times for Argentina.

His success there, made Juventus bring him to Italy, where he struck up a memorable partnership with Welshman John Charles, which saw him add three Serie A titles and to Italian cups to his medal collection. He was even capped 9 times by Italy. Representing his adopted country in the 1962 World Cup in Chile.

He finished his time in Italy playing for Napoli where he managed 12 goals in 63 games, before returning to Argentina, where he coached Rosario Central and River Plate and briefly the national team.
