Morientes to Newcastle? What for?

It has been reported that Newcastle have joined Liverpool in the race for Real Madrid bench warmer, Fernando Morientes It is said that Newcastle are willing to pay up to £10 million for the striker which would put Liverpool off as they do not have the funds to enter into a bidding war. The Mersey-siders had a £3.5 million bid turned down and are expected to bid upto £5 million. If Newcastle tables a bid, Liverpool are expected to go for Manchester City’s Nicolas Anelka because of his availability and age.

Madrid are wanting £7 million for last season’s top-scorer in the Champions League and Monaco, who he was on loan at while doing that, are in the hunt as well.
These are the bare bones of the story that is being reported in both England and Spain, as yet no real interviews have been given although Newcastle United have refused to confirm or deny the story.

The player agent and everyone seam remarkably silent on it. But and I will wander from the story into the realms of my opinion here.

Newcastle do not need to go and spend 10 million of a centre forward, even one of Morientes’ quality. What Newcastle needs is a defence. I am a Newcastle fan and indeed season ticket holder, and where I will welcome any player of quality to the team, he is not what we need by a long way.
