Liverpool winning Juventus in race for defender

Although Juventus have been scouting Auxerre defender Philippe Mexes for months now, it apears that they are behind several premership sides in the race for his signature. Liverpool are now emerging as the favourites to land the young defender. Indeed it is understood that Liverpool have already held talks about Mexes, although Auxerre have publicly refused to name the club involved, there seams little doubt that it was Liverpool.

When asked about the situation the Auxerre Coach stated: "The Juventus scouts have come to see him,". "But they have not contacted us directly, which is contrary to the English clubs, as they have started official negotiations."
