Sheffield United have released defender Lee Sanford from his contract despite the fact that 1 year remains. The 34-year-old joined The Blades from Stoke six seasons ago for a fee of £500,000.

Sandford only managed apperances last season for the Bramall Laan outfit and was loaned out to Stockport where he played 7 games.

It is believed that Sandford was released as the Yorkshire club look to cut the wage bill down.

Sandford will now join the 1000+ out of contract players looking for a new club. The experienced defender may consider dual player/coaching job as he enters the winter of his career.
