EVENT REPORT.

As the Tardis left Earls court on Saturday Night, I began to wonder at what the next few games would bring us! 2 Days of frantic football had just passed with only the cleaners left in the Building, clearing up endless Bottles of Carlsberg, Crisp wrappers, discarded programmes, Torn up team sheets and Pie wrappers. (Mine)

An explosive Weekend saw the Rise of Mrs Koppy and Dills Dopes to the Summit of the League. Koppy himself was gracious about this but refused to do a post match interview. Whilst Wocko sat coolly in the stand watching his team gently rise up the Table, the Ogden’s were faring very differently. The Referee indeed had to caution Stan on two occasions for muttering something in Welsh to Hilda. Hilda received an Obligatory round of applause as she found a rolling pin in her team Kit bag and proceeded to hit Stan with it. Elsewhere, Whilst Lora was cautioned for Snogging Rob Hulse after his first goal, the Most Bizarre incident centred on Andy Baggott who managed to see 2 Yellow Cards, both for over celebrating goals. Steve Bates was Philosophical about his teams’ poor start, saying “Could be worse, Could be Man U” and then crying loudly with Laughter. Manc Azza was very proud of his teams solid Start, but was very concerned about his teams inconsistency. Glazer is God he shouted to the puzzled press core. I tried to find Greg in the post match interview room, but he was still at the Bar reminiscing on the weekends events. “ I thought we started very poor, petered out in the middle and the end was chaos” he moaned. Still he will be back next week I was certain, as will Hugh who stayed on the touchline throughout the two days, even when his team were not playing. This Annoyed LA slightly, but he had problems of his own, receiving 3 cautions for shouting his team name too loudly. Kiwi Pete kept everyone entertained by shouting “Fook off” Stan at 3 minute intervals, and actually had to ask me at the end how his team had fared!! SA was left wondering what he had to do to win next weekend. “ I’ll bring a new team” he added. Bottom, but not for long maybe is Dodge. He was very generous to all of his opponents, calling them “total prissy prima Donna pumped up fairies.” “But the beer was good” He added.

Next weekend we are off to Birmingham’s NEC for the second weekends games which I am already excited about. Each week, I will give you the Tardis commentary on the match of the day. This week it has to be the opener.

Phoenix Whites 4 Magnificent Six3

As the Three thousand strong crowd settled into their seats, I looked across the Arena. Flags of all descriptions were waving. The bar absolutely packed with managers, spouses, families and ex’s all glued to the Television link. Pierluigi Collina, our tournaments referee Started the match, and instantly Magnificent were on the attack. John Charles weaving in and out, leaving Radebe and Fairclough in his wake. A fizzing cross which hit the back board came out and whilst Harvey tried to stop it leaving the Dee, Strachan nipped in with a fierce shot which met the empty net with some aplomb. Two minutes gone, and from the restart, Phoenix looked in total disarray as Charles, ever menacing managed a one – two with Gary Mcallister in the centre. A quick flick on from McAllister saw Strachan ease past Fairclough and Slot home for Number two.

Strachan2 Restarted for Phoenix, and passed the ball forward to Jones who pounded down the wing. A fierce tackle from Madeley left Jones in a heap, but the rebound fell nicely at the feet of Baggott on the edge of the Dee. With Martyn advancing, Baggott managed to curl the ball neatly inside the left hand post. Although the goal celebration earned Baggott an instant Yellow, many were impressed at his fancy footwork.
A few seconds after Half time and it was all square with a neat throw out from Harvey reaching Jones on the Half Way line. His low shot managed to go through the legs of everyone including Martyn. The crowd went absolutely wild. This opening match was so full of action and incident. It was difficult to take your eyes off it. I was very pleased with the Start, and as I opened my portable Pie box, a thundering header from Radebe was deemed to be above head height. Baggott stepped forward for the Free Kick which thundered off the post. Fairclough showed great skill in holding the ball up, but was then robbed by the advancing Jones who passed to Strachan 2. Strachan2 evaded three challenges before passing the ball across the Dee straight to the feet of Radebe who side footed home. Phoenix had taken the lead with less than 30 seconds left. Steve Bates now became very vocal, encouraging his men forward for one final push. Charles hit the post, it cannoned out to Hunter who rounded Radebe, but Fairclough got in a good tackle which saw Baggott clear on goal. Baggott controlled it well, and with Hunter breathing down his neck managed to launch an unstoppable shot into the top left corner of Martyns net. The celebration of waving shirts over ones heads and shouting “Champions of Europe” has obviously not been recognised in Italy, and Collina showed Baggott his second yellow. Collina, helpless with Laughter then blew the final Whistle.

A great start to a great Tournament, and My thanks to all the managers who took part. Have a good week.
