The last couple of months haven’t been great reading for Coventry fans, but thanks to a good start the club are only in 13th and a couple of wins could see the Sky Blues back in the play-off mix (but costing me a few quid in the process). But with over £100 profit thus far I can take the hit. Besides this run can’t carry on much longer…….can it?
Nottingham Forest (H) – Lost 2-1
ODDS: Forest win 11/8, Draw 9/4
MATCH RETURN: £15.31 up
CUMULATIVE RETURN: £133.36 up
MOOD: It seems it can go on, so it’s starting to get a bit worrying. The result was fair – City didn’t deserve anything from this game. Forest are a pretty decent team (despite Billy Davies almost constant call for more and more signings), so it was never going to be easy, but a home fixture against anyoneyou’d hope to take a point.
Leeds United (A) - Lost 1-0
ODDS: Leeds win 7/10, Draw 3/1
MATCH RETURN: £10.25 up
CUMULATIVE RETURN: £143.61 up
MOOD: Unsurprised but very concerned. Leeds are flying high and difficult to beat in their own back yard, so defeat was always likely. Again the most disappointing thing was Coventry didn’t deserve anything from this game, making it three deserved defeats in a row. But next up is Palace at home – if we want to appease thoughts of the R-word (or R-bomb as now seems to be the popular term) we HAVE to win that….
Crystal Palace (H) – Won 2-1
ODDS: Palace win 13/5, Draw 5/2
MATCH RETURN: £10.00 down
CUMULATIVE RETURN: £133.61 up
MOOD: …and thankfully we do, and deservedly as well. In an almost exact copy of the cup game a month before City dominated large periods of the game but didn’t score as often as they should, then in the last five minutes nerves kick in and the team do their hardest to throw it away. Never have I been happier to lose a tenner.
Swansea City (H) – Lost 1-0
ODDS: Swansea win 5/4, Draw 23/10
MATCH RETURN: £14.38 up
CUMULATIVE RETURN: £147.99 up
MOOD: Annoyed. City fail to build on the Palace victory by again showing an inability to put away their chances and concede a soft goal. That’s not to say the Sky Blues should have won – a point would have been a fair result so it’s one step forward two steps back. Winning some money really does nothing to help.
Leicester City (A) – Drew 1-1
ODDS: Leicester win 8/15, Draw 10/3
MATCH RETURN: £3.33 up
CUMULATIVE RETURN: £151.32 up
MOOD: On it’s own I’m should be satisfied with this result – an away draw against a team in very good form, I get my money back and a bit extra for a drink or two and our M69 rivals don’t get bragging rights. But given the run the team are on the team needs more than this. The team deserved the draw (although Sven thought they should be brushing teams like Coventry aside with ease) but it certainly wasn’t easy going and we rode our luck at times. The most annoying thing was AB’s post match comments, who made it sound like we’d been playing Spain – far too much respect given to a team that are (maybe) slightly above average.
Getting towards the business end of the season and those hushed thoughts of play-offs have been quickly replaced by fear of the trap door. City have slumped to their standard position of 17th and I’m winning far more money than I wanted. At this rate I may well get enough for a season ticket, but frankly I don’t think I’d bother using it for one…
