Lincoln City will rarely have a player who caused national headlines in their mix, but that's what they have with defender Sean Newton. Despite a young age, Newton is well travelled in non-league circles.

Liverpudlian Newton started his career with Chester City, making two appearances for the Cheshire club during their 2007/8 season before being loaned out to Southport and Droylsden, the latter of whom made his deal permanent. He enjoyed regular first team football for the first time before making national headlines for both the right and wrong reasons in 2008. He had scored twice as Droylsden beat League Two Chesterfield 2-1 in the FA Cup, securing a tie with Ipswich, however, it turned out that Newton was supposed to be suspended for that match and Droylsden were thrown out of the compeition and the subsequent appeal failed.

A move to Conference side Barrow followed before a three year stint at Telford where he was a near ever present over a three year period. During this period he also represented England C on two occasions. After helping them successfully survive their first year in the Conference, he left the Shropshire club and signed for Stockport. Despite scoring 6 in 43 matches, he couldn't help Stockport become the first traditional Football League club to be relegated to the Conference North. He would spend some of that season as captain of Stockport.

Newton would eventually agree to join Lincoln and will more than likely be the club's regular first choice left back during the 2013/14 season.
