Good news, and will get better surely as he gets more games under his belt?

The best of the loan players brought in last month for me so delighted that he is staying until at least the end of January. I actually think Hughton is a little unlucky as he was one of our better players last season but Hoyte is a class act and we are lucky to have him.

79, you have unintentionally stated the reason he was dropped when you said 'good last year'.....unfortunately he hasn't done enough this season to warrant being in the first team. Other than Gillingham you'd be hard pushed to find a contribution he's made.

Have to agree with you Nathan, in the games that I've seen, Hughton hasn't been playing at the same levels as last season, but after a full pre-season of Sutton's sledgehammer approach to man-management, you could forgive him for that. As a young, likeable and honest lad, you'd hope he returns to his best in the future.

Will be interesting to see where Paul Green fits back into things when he returns from yet another injury. I personally think his days are looking numbered.

I think this raises the issue of should you get good players, or players who are good in a position.

Apart from Lee Beevers, who generally did an honest and sometimes very good, job where ever he played across the back four, we have often had a number of reasonable players in the last 4 years, who were never nailed into any one position and looked vulnerable because of it.

I tend to approve of the Brian Clough model. Look at McGovern, Robertson and Lloyd. They were never the best in the world, but they knew their position and played in it.

Look at the list of players we have played in more than one position,

Hughton right back, right midfield, centre midfield
Green right back, left back, centre half
Clapham left back, left midfield
Hone right back, left back, centre half
Brown left back, left midfield
Mayo/Hughes left back, left midfield
LJL/DNG/ right and left midfield/winger, striker
2 Scots right and left midfield/winger, striker
Facey winger, striker
Pearson centre half, centre forward
Clarke holding position, right midfield, right back
Hutchinson striker, right midfield
Baker left back, centre half

Either the above is just a product of our shallow squad, or (as I rather think) it is a product of an appreciation of generall ability over knowledge of playing in a position. I personally think there is too much emphasis on basic ball skills and not enough on understanding and playing in a position.

How many positions has Kerr played in? He may not be mine (or a number of other people's favourite), but he knows what he can do and he does it. No messing; just the job.

I think we, and the modern game in general, have lost some appreciation for on-the-job knowledge.

In this modern game of small squads at this level, an adaptable player that can play in several positions is always going to get preference over a "one-position" player, simply because he can fill in gaps that appear when a player gets injured.

Clough man that I am, the quick and physical passing game today IMHO means that his days are gone.

Or is it coincidence that our best football under Schoey came with a settled squad, where everyone knew their place.? I even dimly remember Schoey saying something like "We don't dive in in case we get injured.".

Or am I dreaming.?
