After a brilliant performance at Wycombe on Saturday, the Imps returned to Sincil Bank with what has become a typical home performance. City created plenty of chances but yet again failed to take any of them, and much like most of City's opponents, every shot on target against the Imps went in.

Neither side controlled the opening section of the match with only a long range Mustapha Carayol effort troubling Dunn. McKenzie headed over for the visitors before Tozer produced a last minute challenge to deny Carayol from on a few yards out.

City were generally the team on top but balls into the box were met by unchallenged Northampton defenders and it appeared as though it was going to be yet another frustrating evening for the Imps. Osman was booked for a rash challenge on Jarrett before Broughton headed a Keltie cross over from 2 yards out. More frustration followed as good work from Keltie and Clapham saw the latter play a good ball into the box, only to see neither Broughton or Hutchinson anywhere near the ball and it went out comfortably for a throw in.

It had been a poor half in all fairness, but the Imps had generally been the only team with any attacking intent....and then, much like a lot of teams that have come to Sincil Bank in the past, Northampton scored with their first chance on goal. It came after Gowling cleared the ball for a corner, it found it's way to McKay and his effort hit the post before rebounding to Beckwith, he shot first time into the net and City were behind.

Luke Howell blasted over from range for City before Dunn saved at Hutchinson's feet to end the half.

The second half started with Hutchinson winning a free kick 25 yards out after being fouled. Clapham stepped up but unlike in the game against Macclesfield, his effort his the wall and was safely cleared. Guinan replaced McKenzie for the visitos.

It was another slow half but City's attacking impetus was very poor indeed. Northampton hit the woodwork for a second time when Osman heading against the bar before Wedderburn hit a left footed shot well wide of the target. Tilson decided at this point to change things, Drewe Broughton and Ben Hutchinson both left the pitch to boos from the home fans, being replaced by the returning Delroy Facey and Ashley Grimes.

Grimes had a quickfire effort as his first shot was closed down but it wasn't long before Northampton took what was a relatively deserved second. Guinan forced a corner and Johnson headed in Gillingan's effort. McCallum replaced Carayol for the Imps.

With Northampton seeing out the game, Facey headed wide and across goal from mere yards out before Northampton again hit the woodwork, this time Guinan hitting the bar from 25 yards.

The game ended 2-0 and still leaves City without a win under Tilson and now sitting 23rd in the League.

Normal service resumes as City drop into relegation zone
