In an article in the Nottingham Evening Post, it was revealed that Leeds United had told Notts County that they were prepared to loan out Somma again. The Magpies had tried to sign him on loan and had been told by Simon Grayson that they were willing to let him go, but then Grayson changed his mind.
Somma was in fantastic form for Lincoln on loan from Leeds last season, scoring 9 goals in 14 game and single handedly saving City from the drop. One of his games was against Notts County and Notts quickly became admirers of the striker. City are believed to have offered the Leeds striker a deal that was rejected. Whereas Notts also made a bid to sign him.
"I spoke to Grayson about Somma earlier in the summer and he said we might be able to have him," Notts County manager Craig Short told the Nottingham Evening Post. "I rang one of the Leeds players while we have been in Austria and he told me Somma was flying in training so I knew then we were never going to get him. Simon texted me and said they are going to keep him."
After impressing in recent friendlies for Leeds, it appears Somma will get his chance at Elland Road after joining them last summer.
guys as a football fan i want to see you do well but if you keep dwelling on somma then time season start you will all be in a rut which is not good for any team, need to stop dwelling on past and trust chris sutton to guide you to promotion this season.
Spot on fella.
Time to move on and let CS find someone else which I'm sure he will, although some on here will disagree.
They think he got lucky with Somma even though Sutton had seen him play for Leeds ressies against us just before he went on loan to Chesterfield.
I wasn't sure about CS when he first came but he's learning fast and is bringing in players who will take us up the table.
I expect a few loans some time after to the home friendlies, who knows if we do get a bumper crowd for the Celtic we may be able to get another player or two in permanently who knows?
I see what your saying David, But you think Broughton/Facey will get goals.
Not being negative but we were told we were going to push the boat a bit for a goal scorer... Now without being harsh, have 'we' as fans been lied to?
Was it just a fabrictaion to sell a few season tickets? I think we are at a very low level regarding season tickets in comparison to other years..
Again with all due respect , 3 weeks to kick off, and have we got a goalscorer?? Not that I can see, a winger who got a few, who I think could be good, and a winger who Sutton thinks could be a goalscorer.
In my opinion that is not good enough, players need time to Gell, If we get Anson, isn't he the same as Facey/Broughton?
We let Hone go and get a geezer on trial who was released by Vale - It all seems abit odd to me.
In a nutshell - The team that finished the season, ala Somma, Saunders, Herd et al in my opinion is better than we have now... I could be wrong , but then again I might not be and if thats the case we will go down.
Alas Uncle Bob continues to suffer from selective amnesia. Not that I am suggesting that when a fan becomes the chairman they should put money in of course.
No no the positivity police would never have that.
It is also very easy for you to bid for something that you know you can't obtain and then fail to see another fellow or fellows for similar money it seems. Perhaps it is the flatness of our fair county that lessens the view, who knows?
Now where is that nice cold wet stone of mine. Ah here it is, best crawl back under it.

Until we see the standard of the loan players we cant judge really can we?
As they were the players that made the difference last season.
I think the players in general that Sutton has brought in so far are better than Jackson brought last season, Clapham will be another good addition to the squad I do agree about Prosser though not sure at all about him.
As Baker is currently away with the u-19s we may have to wait a while for him.
If the loanees are no good then I'll start to worry as all clubs at this level use the loan system to bolster their squad.
Like I said in my previous post the Celtic game could be a real boost to the club's finances.
I agree what the chairman said it was wrong and built up false hope of a 'marquee' signing that was never going to happen was it?
Anyway its Saturday time for a pint or two
i agree with kevsandhursts point...who cares if leeds were prepared to let him go...he isnt coming here and probably never would. get over it, a big thanks for his efforts last year...end of. he will do well for leeds no doubt this year. we need to move on. the ammount of moaning on this board is unreal, as amusing as it is to read now and then, its getting boring now! we have in my opinion made some good progress this summer with the signings, it will be a totally different side to last year...who knows, facey may end up getting a bagful?! stop giving off about the board lying to sell season tickets, im sure they have tried very hard to get a proven striker in, but it must be a nightmare to acheive, im sure all other 23 clubs in our league want the same. who wants to think back to the PJ days and his bragging about his magnificent seven ?? .......didnt think so... i would swap where we are now squad wise with back then anyday. if we are@#$%&and its not working come october ish, then we have a right to moan and start all the doom and gloom talk...til then, come on...lets get behind CS and all his side that he is putting together and see where it takes us....it can hardly be worse than recent years !!!!!

Normanstanley Not being negative, being realistic..
And quoting Bob's mantra that we are going to push the boat out...
As I have said before Fans will vote with their feet..
first point, reality is we are a small club with small finances, why do people expect us to be world beaters and have the leagues biggest signings each year ?
i agree , fans vote with their feet and quite rightly so, if we are as awful as previous seasons, then fine....but lets wait and see first before all the gloom on this board.

yep, fair point nornastanley, i digress ! i am sure that BD wishes he never used that sentence now....i'm sure he and CS have tried to get the Marque signing they said would get us all drooling, which im sure was somma, but the reality is unless the roman at chelski gets bored there and decides to dabble in L2 for fun, we will always struggle to get the players we feel we deserve, we just dont have the cash. i still think this season will be a turning point in our recent history, a couple of good youngsters on season loans, a good start in august, crowds on the increase.....happy days?

we did bid for Somma but he wanted to be a Leed player not alot the club can do but i do agree the winter when we were top we should have pushed the boat out and strengthened the side.
Cracking first 6 months of the season then terminale decline from then on.

If we bid for Somma, and I will have to take your word for that - Does all sound alittle bit like the 'Marquee' bit, then tell me Helgy that 150k, plus wages, why isn't it redirected into another quality player... There are plenty out there.... Can't wait for this answer.

I know that we bid for Somma but thats as far as my knowledge goes.
We spoke to the Barnet player but he prefered Bristol City so it's the players that don't want to come here.
150k where did that come from doubt we could do that plus wages not on 3.5k crowds.

I too would be interested to know the answer to that. Incidentally helgy please disist with the threatening pm's you need not fear me you and your club buddies have totally put me off going anywhere near the club until there is genuine change. I merely felt it was time to post having seen all the stuff you have suggested.

I believe you said it Helgy...I think on Vitals if I am right.
It was on a board not linked to Lincoln at first but ended up our boards of course once it was spotted.
I would be amazed if we have bid 150k for a player.
Didnt you mention we put a bid in for Somma a bit back Norman?
Apologies if you didnt.
Yeah I did, I thought it was 100k though , not the 150k I have read on vitals.. Though my point was splash this on another forward, maybe dip into the NL... The cynical side of me just thinks we were never going to do it and statements etc were just made to entice and appease fans.
Normanstanley is spot on. You can be a Chairman and say "I'm going to spend £10m to bring David Beckham in" with the knowledge that Beckham would never join your club.
It's called spin and it's a way of getting people excited by 'ambition' but there is no ambition in making those pie in the sky statements.

I see Connell scored against the Wendies today..
I remember you mentioning a figure for Somma but wasnt sure how much.
I agree totally with about what Bob said and even odder a report in the echo during the week said the money was still set aside!!!
What is going on, can someone please tell me??!!!
Not that fussed about Connell, Sutton will have probably gone that terrible performance he put in here in April and his terrible injury record too.
If no one comes by the end of the window then I get worried not before.
McCallum and Carayol certainly appear to have goals in them.
I agree David, I think they do, they both look good lads.
But.. Neither is a centre forward, 1 a winger, the other a converted winger. Make no mistake we need a goalscorer as wingers can be very erratic, Centre Forwards with pedigree thrive on gaols and that is all their job is seen as really.
It does seem odd david that one minute cash is set aside, the next minute, it's drying up - It would be nice to have an explanation for this ambiguity?
As I say I can't help but think it's a 'spin' as BM alludes to.
We need to either get someone from our league who has goals in them, Maybe GP from Burton, or go lower into the BSP.
I think we could regret not getting Connell - Don't know why, just a hunch.
Just for reference, so that we can all make sure that we are only commenting on what has been said, and not on what we think was said, I have extracted a few of the interviews from earlier this year, which relate to Mr Dorrian.
My interpretation is that if the right person was available they would look to take the risk on spending the money and that that would be a reasonable policy. However, that isn't the same as saying we are definately going to go out and sign that type of player, nor is it inconsistent with having tried to and failed.
The slightly wider context that seems to have emerged since the original comments on a 'Marquee' signing is that players demands (at least at the early part of the window) have been higher than we anticipated they would be.
I don't know Mr Dorrian, or any of the people who run the club, but I don't see any conspiracies here, just people wanting to do the best they can and finding it hard.
I just find it all very odd Cherry one day we have money put away the next day we dont?
Very strange indeed.
Hopefully we'll make loads of dosh from the Celtic game and that will allow to make this signing who knows?
I've met Bob's son a couple of times but not Bob and he's a decent enough chap.

I have given up trying to fathom it out it ends up driving you crazy in the end.
Players and their agents always seem to ask for silly money at the beginning of the close season, and the demands get less and less as the new season approaches. Only trouble is, you can end up losing your first choice players and then having to go through the whole businesses of contacting other agents and trying to agree terms all over again.
