McCallum given the Number 9 shirt

By Nathan Jackson
June 30 2010

The question of who will fill the number 9 shirt for the Imps next season has been answered, it's Gavin McCallum. It has been speculated that the Canadian will play up front this season and that appears to certainly be the case as he's been given the important jersey.

Despite playing prodominantly on the wing for Hereford, McCallum did show some excellent finishing last season in the 2-0 win for the Bulls at Edgar Street in February. Sutton's seen his potential up front and has now given him the Number 9 jersey.

Mustapha Carayol is 7, Drewe Broughton is 10, Josh O'Keefe is 14 and Albert Jarrett is 17.

Interestingly, Ian Pearce has not been given a squad number, indication that Sutton will not play him unless there's an emergency.

That worries me a touch that the majority of business is done, so much for a 'Marquee signing' and the 'something big' a certain poster was alluding to.

Thing about that is that we shouldn't read too much into it. Yeo was number 12 in his first season, whereas GTF was number 27 in both of his.

Some number 9 strikers have been useless......Paul Connor springs straight to mind.

Good Luck, Mr Gorsky

Granted, good point, but the majority of the time, 9 and 10 are your forwards...

True, I think the last decent number 9 we had was Stallard (only his first season though). As previously mentioned there was Connor, I think it was Gall before him (enough said)

Sutton has said more are on the way either permantly or through the loan market.
Still over 5 weeks til the season starts.
The from Indian Ocean Island start their trial tomorrow.
Macc have barely signed a player and Bury have shipped loads out.
Think Sutton was very ambitious/optomistic to say least in hoping to get players he wanted in by the start of pre-season training.
I've never known a City manager ever have his whole team together by then.
If he has it ready by the time we play Celtic that will be fine.

Here we go again!
Will we ever get the right man?

Here you go

Just click the "Current Players" drop down menu and all the squad numbers are in there. I'm assuming they're the final numbers because otherwise there would be a lot of complaints if shirts with numbers got sent out....and then changed.

I presume this is for the release of the new shirt on Thursday.

Interstingly Hone has retained his No 6 shirt, but Clarke and Fagan get bumped to different numbers. Hughton has also chosen to retain his number 25 and although Pearce isn't listed at number 13, no one else is either, so they may still be deciding on whether he will register as a player next year.

That leaves a current squad of 21 including,

Pearce and Musselwhite
Fagan and Clarke
Hone
Hutchinson, Adams and Miller

or 13 with a chance of starting the first game.

I would expect at least 3 more before we start the season.

I'm not convinced the squad numbering system indicates a great deal. Danny Hone has a 'first team' number and Chris Fagan would still appear to be quite high up the pecking order.

Sorry but 1-11 doesn't fill in with any great optimism that we can mount any sort of challenge.

As I said earlier in the thread Aryan, being in 1-11 doesn't necessarily mean you'll start the games.

Look at squads of the past for example.

Yeo was 12 in 2002/3
GTF was 27 in both his seasons.
McAuley was 17 in 2004/5
Wright was 15 in 2008/9
N'Guessan was 17 in 2007/8
Dodds was 19 in 2007/8

Good Luck, Mr Gorsky

I suppose the numbers get issued out to those that are here at the start pre-season and get first pick.
Later arrivals just get the leftovers.
The numbers really dont mean a think these days.
Ledley King always wears 26 at Spurs and Defoe wears 18.
Not that fussed really as we are winning I couldn't care less what number they wear. smiling smiley

Here we go again!
Will we ever get the right man?
