Ex-Imp back in management

John Ward has returned to football management after taking over at Colchester United on Monday. The former Imps striker has had considerable success as a manager, including taking an otherwise shocking Cheltenham side up through the Playoffs in 2006.

Ward was one of the best strikers in Lincoln's history, being a key part in the record breaking 1975-6 title winning season and he reputation is one of the reasons he won't return to Sincil Bank as manager. He has said on numerous occasions he has no desire to manage City because he doesn't want to potentially ruin the memory people have of him.

Ward is a rarity in football management having being in charge of both Bristol based clubs. He has also managed York, Cheltenham and Carlisle in his time, although he left the Carlisle job in 2008 and had spent his time since then as assistant at Stockport.

He replaces Aidy Boothroyd as manager at Layer Road.
