Royals left back Nicky Shorey has suffered a setback with his foot infection which could rule him out of pre-season training and the start of next season.Shorey has been injured since the 3-2 win over Cardiff City.

Nicky Shorey could miss the start of next season after club physio Jon Fearn admitted his progress hasn't gone as well as first hoped.

This would be a major blow to Steve Coppell's plans as Shorey is the only natural left back at the club with experience. Andy Hughes and Ricky Newman have filled in when required but they can't continue doing this crucial role when so much is at stake next season.

The infection came just before the Cardiff City away game. Shorey had felt some pain for around 2 weeks now and suddenly his foot was swollen up so severely he was immediately sent home on the train and was hospitalised for a week.

The diagnosis made by Shorey's specialist initially ruled Shorey out for 6 weeks. But this could be much longer than expected.

Royals Manager Steve Coppell signed Coventry City full back Dean Gordon on-loan on transfer deadline day but he was unable to break into the team.
