The summer rumour mill has churned out another cracker, with Italian striker Luca Toni linked with a move to Old Trafford. Toni secured Europe's Golden Shot award with his goalscoring form at Fiorentina and could prove a useful replacement for Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

Rumours suggest Sir Alex Ferguson is eyeing-up a move for Italian striker Luca Toni, as a potential replacement to the out-of-favour Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The 29-year-old is hoping to shine for the Azzuri during the World Cup finals, and is tipped by many pundits to be in contention for the 'Golden Boot' award.

He is currently playing his football at Fiorentina having enjoyed an amazing year with the club since his move from Palermo in August 2005.

Toni netted a sensational 31 club goals last term as he helped the Serie A club qualify for Uefa Champions League football, just four years after they hit bankruptcy and were demoted to Serie C2. His efforts saw him easily secure Italy's top scorer accolade and Europe's Golden Shoe award.

Since turning professional with Modena in 1994, the towering forward has notched up 147 goals from 336 appearances and at 6'4 would surely prove a potent attacking threat in any league. With van Nistelrooy's departure becoming more likely with the news of Tottenham's interest, Toni could prove a popular replacement with supporters.

However, the Red Devils may have to fork out a fee in the region of £18million for Toni's services, and are likely to face stiff opposition from the likes of Inter Milan if they pursue the player's signature.
