United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy cannot understand why his career at Old Trafford hangs in the balance. The Dutchman appears to have fallen out with Sir Alex Ferguson, and looks set to leave the club over the summer. New Page 1

Ruud Van Nistelrooy has confessed he is completely puzzled why his Manchester United career has fallen off the rails in such rapid fashion.

The Dutchman has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford since storming away from United's final league game of the season against Charlton Athletic, having been axed from the match-day squad. This fuelled earlier speculation of a likely exit after Van Nistelrooy was left out of the League Cup final XI which triumphed against Wigan back in February.

"I know a lot of people in Manchester don't understand it, well it is the same for me." confirmed Van Nistelrooy.

"I love Manchester United. That is why I don't really understand it."

However, the striker, so prolific in his five seasons with United, refuses to admit his career with the Red Devils is over, despite the fall-out with Fergie and paper talk suggesting AC Milan are weighing up a summer swoop.

"I have two years left on my contract and if things stay the way they are at the moment I will still be at the club next season."
