Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Quinton Fortune will not see his contract renewed at the end of the season. The South African has been troubled greatly by injury problems and has not featured for United so far this term.

Quinton Fortune will leave Manchester United at the end of the season on a free transfer.

The South African international will end a seven-year stretch at Old Trafford, plagued by a series of injury troubles, having failed to register a single appearance for Sir Alex Ferguson's men this term. At 28-years of age, Sir Alex Ferguson feel the Red Devils have got the best they can out of the versatile left-sider.

"We have a lot of good young players in his position, so we are not going to be renewing his contract," confirmed the Scotsman. "He has been a great servant and played some terrific games for us and I think next season he will get a good club."

"I explained the situation to him the best I could, which was not easy because he is such a great lad."

Fortune arrived at Old Trafford in the August of 1999, following he club's Treble heroics the previous campaign.  He has racked up 126 appearances in the red jersey, but has never cemented a regular first-team position and has been played in a wide-range of outfield positions. The move seems to suit both parties, with United looking to rebuild and Fortune needing to put years of injury woe behind him and lease new life into his footballing career.
