Ruud Van Nistelrooy will be out of action for up to six weeks after aggravating an Achilles injury. The Dutchman hasn't played since United's win at West Bromwich Albion, and may not be back in the red jersey until February.

Manchester United's title hopes were dealt a major blow with the news that Ruud Van Nistelrooy will be sidelined for around six weeks. The Dutch international has picked up an Achilles injury and will be unavailable for selection for some time, possibly missing 11 domestic matches as the Red Devils hunt for silverware.

28-year-old Van Nistelrooy has missed United's last three games after taking the knock during the demolition of West Bromwich Albion. He will now miss a number of Premiership games, in addition to the F.A Cup tie at home to Exeter City and the two League Cup games against Chelsea. However, better news is that the prolific forward is likely to be available for the European Cup second-round games against AC Milan. The striker is United's record goalscorer in Champions League history.

"Van Nistelrooy has an Achilles injury. Hopefully, it's four weeks or six weeks at the very most." confirmed Sir Alex Ferguson.

"It's not great news for us at all because what started off as a calf injury is now an Achilles injury.

"The key is what to do next. The recommended treatment is therapy and complete rehabilitation, operating is not an option at this early stage."

The news looks certain to crush any speculation that Louis Saha was on the verge of leaving the club on a temporary basis over New Year. With Solskjaer injured, the Frenchman will join Alan Smith and Wayne Rooney as United's main attacking options. The trio will be anxious to prove a point to Sir Alex Ferguson during the absence of Van Nistelrooy.
