France have joined the ever growing list of
Euro 2004 casualties that include Spain, Germany, Italy and of course
England after their 1-0 defeat by the hands of Greece.
United pair Mikael Silvestre and Louis Saha both appeared in the game but couldn't prevent a 65th minute Angelos Charisteas header. Greece could have taken an early lead at the Jose Alvalade. Costas Katsouranis' shot was looking goal-bound but was collected on the line by former United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez. Barthez was then called into action 22 minutes later and did well to tip Takis Fyssas' cheeky lob/shot over the bar. Theodoros Zagorakis' cross was converted into a goal by Charisteas 20 minutes after the re-start much to the surprise of the French side. Despite Jacques Santini throwing on Louis Saha, France couldn't break down the Greek defence and claim an equaliser, although Thierry Henry had a golden opportunity but misdirected his header wide. Final score: France 0 - Greece 1 |
