Danny Pugh has spoken on his move to Leeds United after being included in the controversial deal that brought Alan Smith to Old Trafford. The 21-year-old fears that the fans may turn against him at Elland Road, but hopes that he can play an important role for the Yorkshire side next season.

Leeds United's new left-back Danny Pugh has spoken out after being sold to the Yorkshire club as part of the deal that brought Alan Smith to Manchester United. The 21-year-old was used as a pawn in the move in addition to the £7million recieved by Leeds as they look to escape the financial ruin they find themselves in.

"I'm just looking forward to getting started here now. I got to a stage at Manchester where I needed a change and I think this is the perfect place for that change. Obviously when you are at a club you want to play as many first team games as you can, that's what you are judged on, I would have liked to have played more games but it didn't happen and I believe I can do that here now." said the highly-rated youngster.

Pugh was always judged as a bright prospect at Old Trafford, but never quite managed to break into the first-team with competition for places among the first-team squad intense. Pugh was a regular in the United reserve side and was touted as being the next big thing a few years ago, but only registered 7 senior appearances for the Red Devils. Leeds United have begun a huge rebuilding process as they prepare for life in the First Division, and the versatile left-sided player could play an important role in their team next season.

"High standards have always been expected of me at Manchester United since I've been there, and hopefully that's what I can bring here and carry it on. I don't know how the fans will take to me, but if I am performing well on the pitch then I am sure they won't have a problem with me." added the Englishman.

"It won't matter then who I played for before - as long as I am doing a job for Leeds United it will all go well. It's definitely a challenge, but I'm looking forward to that challenge and hope I can succeed here. If I can play as many games as possible and establish myself as a regular then I will be happy. I know it's not going to be easy to get into the side but I will work as hard as I can."
