The reports suggest that the tournament will be competed for by four different clubs, with United being joined by Japan's Urawa Reds in addition to further clubs. Rumours are suggesting those two other teams will be Mexico's Cruz Azul and the unlikely choice of First Division club and part-time United rivals Stoke City.

'The offer came from the tournament's promoters and we have replied saying we will go,' said Urawa press officer Daisuke Maruyama.

Uruwa are the best supported club in Japan, and look set to challenge for their first J-League crown in 2004. The interest in Manchester United Football Club from Japan would mean this possible tournament would be likely to receive coverage all over the world. Any such tournament would be likely to take place during the first week of August.

However, United previously revealed that they were in discussion about returning to the United States of America for a pre-season tour. Heading to America and hosting a tournament in Manchester would leave for an extremely cramped schedule of friendlies, so it is unlikely the club will do both.
