Alan Smith, the player who once told the media he would never sign for Manchester United, has been linked with a move to Old Trafford. A price tag of around £8million has also alerted Newcastle United, who are also looking for a new striker during the January sales. New Page 1

Alan Smith to Old Trafford?
With the transfer window now open, Manchester United are believed to be lining up a bid for Leeds United star Alan Smith. However, Newcastle United are also showing interest in the English international, who is reported to not be enjoying life at struggling Leeds United.

Smith, who was once quoted in the media as saying "I will never play for Manchester United, the club I hate" is carrying a reduced price tag of £8million as United's Yorkshire rivals look to bring in some fast cash to cool the financial ruin currently destroying the club.

The rumours come only a week after the Leeds United board insisted they would not be forced to sell any of their big-time players as they look to survive in the Premiership after a more than disappointing first-half of the season.

It is also believed that Sir Alex Ferguson made a bid for Leeds' Mark Vidkua in December of £3.5million, which was rejected by the club despite the well-publicised spay between the Australian and the relegation-threatened club.
