Sir Alex Ferguson is tipping his new signing Tim Howard to become United's first choice 'keeper. The American international signed a four-year contract with the Red Devils today, and believes he can make the number one United jersey his, ahead of both Fabien Barthez and Roy Carroll. Ferguson Tips Howard Success

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is tipping new signing Tim Howard to become his number one choice between the sticks. 

“The one thing you can’t guarantee a footballer is a first team place, but there is no question in my mind he’s got the material to do that,” said Sir Alex, at a press conference confirming Howard’s signing today. 

Ferguson’s comments have fuelled speculation over the future of Fabien Barthez. 

The French international recently announced he has no plans to leave Old Trafford, but with the signing of Howard possibly putting him down to third in the United ‘keeper pecking list, a move away from the Premiership Champions could be Barthez’s only option.
