UEFA Announce Cup Changes

UEFA have confirmed plans that the format of the Uefa Cup will be changed for the 2004/2005 season.

The competition will now include a group stage, as UEFA look to modernise the Cup, which has lost some of it's appeal in recent seasons.

The new-look Uefa Cup will have a knock-out first round of 80 clubs, followed by the group stages. The 40 clubs will play in eight groups of five clubs, with each club playing each other only once.

The top three clubs will qualify from each group, and be joined by eight clubs from the Champions League for the final knock-out rounds, played over two legs.

"We have acted to refresh and develop the competition for the future," said Uefa president Lennart Johansson.

"We believe that the proposed format will add a new and exciting element to the Uefa Cup, which will boost it as an attractive European club competition."
