Rooney at his testimonial

In some recent years, Manchester United have over exerted in pre-season; packing in the friendly matches as part of corporate-led global tours.

However, the 2016/17 pre-season campaign – despite including a global tour, and a place in the International Champions Cup – has lacked the intensity.

So, it was arguably fitting that United’s pre-season preparations concluded with a 0-0 draw – against Everton, in Wayne Rooney’s testimonial.

Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were among those in action for the Red Devils, in a fixture both teams clearly used as an important part of their summer build-up; rather than the more fun-filled matches often associated with testimonials.

The game did include many of the staples of a testimonial fixture, however. A guard of honour for the England man, and plenty of tributes to his 12 seasons at United. Significant proceeds were also raised for the newly-created Wayne Rooney Foundation.

30-year-old Rooney has clocked up 512 appearances for United, since his move from Everton in 2004, for whom he appeared 77 times. At the full-time whistle, he addressed the crowd and spoke of his hope that many trophy-filled years were to come for him at United.

This stalemate was United’s fourth friendly outing – and followed a defeat to Dortmund, victory at Wigan and a win in Sweden against Galatasary. Competitive action now follows – with Leicester City up next in the Community Shield, and Jose Mourinho’s first proper match at the helm.
