David de Gea was denied a share of the Premier League golden gloves in cruel circumstances, as he conceded in the final minute of Manchester United’s final league game of the season.

Chris Smalling turned into his own net in the closing stages of Tuesday’s re-arranged clash with AFC Bournemouth.

It meant Arsenal’s Peter Cech claimed sole ownership of the golden gloves with 16 clean sheets, one more than United’s Spanish shot stopper.

De Gea’s clean sheets have played a critical role in United’s league campaign, which ended in fifth placed and qualification for the group stages of the Europa League.

Having only mustered 49 league goals, De Gea’s heroics have further enhanced his reputation with the Red Army, despite the player’s previous eagerness to leave the club in favour of Real Madrid. Ahead of the AFC Bournemouth contest, he picked up the fans player of the season award.
