Michael Carrick believes Manchester United's upcoming Champions League ties against Club Brugge could set the club up for the important campaign ahead.

Following two narrow Premier League victories, attentions turn to continental competition as United face Brugge in competitive action for the first time.

With the first leg of the play-off clash at Old Trafford, Louis van Gaal's men will be looking for a comfortable win to take a big step forward to the finals of Europe's biggest tournament.

The importance of the occasion is, of course, well recognised by United's vice-captain as the midfielder prepares for a return to Champions League action on Tuesday after a one-year absence.

Speaking to ManUtd.com, he said: "It’s going to be a big night on Tuesday. It’ll be a big two games in fact - they could help set us up for the season. "

What we have to gain is very important, but you approach both matches as any other games. We want to win on Tuesday and not concede. Hopefully we can get a good start and take a lead to their place. We’ll be ready."

Tuesday's fixture is a 7.45pm kick-off at Old Trafford.
