As speculation linking Falcao with Chelsea continues, it serves as a reminder as to the calibre of player that simply failed to perform at Manchester United last season.

There was huge surprise, but also excitement, when Falcao was unveiled as a United signing last summer. In short, Louis van Gaal had secured the services of a global superstar with proven goalscoring ability.

Whilst question marks lingered over how he would fit into the team, the Colombian was undoubtedly a phenomenal acquisition that, along with the capture of Angel di Maria, served as a statement of intent as to United’s continued high-ranking in world football.

Ultimately, however, both players – and in particular Falcao – were hugely disappointing. Fans spent much of the season willing the target man to impress, but a measly return of four goals can only be summarised as a flop.

The 29-year-old registered 29 appearances over the season, 12 of which were from the bench. He mustered up a return of goals matched by Chris Smalling; and failed to score on his final 13 appearances for the club.

Falcao showed glimpses of his brilliance. A powerful equaliser at Villa Park was the frontman at his best; but those flashes of talent were all too rare. He never came close to justifying a pre-agreed option to capture his signature permanently for a £43.5million fee.

However, despite a forgettable season at United, Falcao is in high demand; and the potential of a high-profile partnership with Diego Costa at Chelsea continues to dominate back page headlines.

As Colombia bowed out of the Copa America to Argentina on penalties, one of which was scored by Falcao, concrete news is expected to soon materialise about his future.

Time will tell - but success for El Tigre at Stamford Bridge wouldn't surprise too many United fans, many of whom continue to ponder what might have been.
