McNair falls just short of clean sheet debut

Paddy McNair's Norn Iron debut ended in defeat, as the Ulstermen suffered a 1-0 defeat at Hampden Park, courtesy of a Christophe Berra strike.

Berra hit the net on 85 minutes, as McNair - who played the entire friendly - fell just short of a clean sheet.

United's Jonny Evans was also in action for the visitors, and was substituted only a few minutes before the decisive goal.

McNair had some nervy moments on his debut. He was, however, aided by a composed and impressive display from team mate Evans, which is sure to please Louis van Gaal.

The departure of Danny Welbeck led to criticism that van Gaal was departing from United's long-held tradition of entrusting youth, but, on the contrary, the Dutchman's belief in McNair has helped collect a first of what may well be many international caps.
