Manchester United have smashed the British transfer record and completed a major coup with the sensational signing of Ángel Di María for a £59.7million fee.

The Red Devils have delivered a major statement of intent to the rest of the continent by securing the services of one of Europe’s most coveted players.

In splashing out nearly £60million on the 26-year-old, United have comfortably smashed the country’s previous transfer record, Chelsea’s £50million acquisition of Fernando Torres.

Di María could make his debut on the weekend for the Lancashire derby at Burnley, and it is hoped will inject pace and creativity to a United line-up which, too often, has lacked a cutting edge in recent times.

Real Madrid have said they did what they could do retain the Argentinean international - but, after a move from Paris Saint Germain hit problems - Di María was eager to leave the European champions and join Louis van Gaal at the Theatre of Dreams.

His arrival follows the summer signings of Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo, and reports suggest United's incredible spending spree may not be over, with van Gaal potentially interested in further reinforcements in defence or the middle of the park.
