Chris Smalling is understood to have sustained a groin injury during Sunday's 1-1 draw with Sunderland, adding to the club's injury woes.
The England defender hobbled off after 44 minutes, to be replaced by youngster Michael Keane, as Louis van Gaal awaits his first win in charge of the club.
Smalling joins a host of team-mates in the treatment room, with fellow defenders Luke Shaw and Jonny Evans among those out of action.
The injury is to be assessed, but the player - who was unlikely to be considered for Tuesday's League Cup clash at MK Dons - must now be considered a doubt for United's next league outing, at Burnley.
