On his way?

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that Ángel Di María has said his goodbye to his team mates amid intense speculation that the player is on the verge of a record-breaking move to Manchester United.

The player has already told the European champions of his desire to leave, and Ancelotti has dropped a major hint that the player is Old Trafford-bound, stating that he has bid his Real team mates farewell.

"Di Maria has not trained with us today and he came in to say goodbye to the players and people at the club," said the former Chelsea boss.

He added that the Bernabeu club had “done what it could” to try and retain the player’s services.

Initial reports that United would need to splash out £50million on the player, however, may have been conservative.

Speculation suggests the Red Devils have been quoted a whopping £75million price tag for the 26-year-old, which would make the deal one of the four biggest transfers in global football history.

Any transfer would mark a massive statement of intent from United as to their ability to compete in the transfer market for the world’s top players, and would follow the major summer acquisitions of Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo.

Louis van Gaal's need to strengthen the squad has been highlighted by a medicore start to the season, with United collecting a solitary point from their opening two Premier League fixtures.
