Nani missed a penalty and was substituted on his Sporting Lisbon return but the Portuguese outfit grabbed a late goal to beat Arouca 1-0.
He also picked to a yellow card on a less than memorable return to the club.
The penalty miss had looked crucial as the game headed towards a goalless stalemate.
However, Carlos Mane scored a late goal to hand the home side all three points, as Verde-e-Brancos aim to improve on last season's second-place finish.
Nani's spot-kick error came as the winger kicked-off his second spell at the club, having earlier agreed a season-long loan move.
After joining United from Sporting in 2007, he notched up 229 appearances as a Red Devil, finding the target on 36 occasions.
