Walsall boss content despite missing United tie

Walsall manager Dean Smith is content with his side's League Cup draw, despite his side coming agonisingly close to being paired alongside Manchester United.

The Saddlers remained unmatched as the seeded draw reached its conclusion - and were either set to face United or Crystal Palace.

Having been paired against the Eagles, Smith told Sky Sports: "I'm really pleased. It was a 50-50 call between Palace and Man United, so financially for the football club Manchester United would have been a bigger draw, but Crystal Palace is a really good draw for us".

The two teams have not met since 1998, when Sir Alex Ferguson's men claimed a comfortable 5-1 win over the Midlands club at Old Trafford, thanks to two goals apiece from Andy Cole and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and an effort from Ronny Johnsen.

United were ultimately drawn at Milton Keynes Dons, with the two teams set to meet for the first time following Wimbledon FC’s controversial relocation to the Buckinghamshire town.
