Ole's back in town

As Cardiff City boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made an emotional return to Old Trafford, Manchester United claimed three pivotal Premier League points with a two-goal victory. 

Despite a bitterly disappointing 2014 to date, there was a sense of optimism around the Theatre of Dreams as big-money signing Juan Mata made his debut, playing just behind the returning Robin van Persie, with Wayne Rooney named amongst the substitutes.

It was not a vintage United display, with Cardiff enjoining long spells of possession - but these were three vital points for the Red Devils, hopefully offering a springboard for an improved run of form.

RVP broke the deadlock on six minutes. Press reports talking up Mata's involvement in the goal, in all honesty, are over the top. His long pass was kept in play by Patrice Evra and, after Ashley Young's cross was nodded onto the bar by Antonio Valencia, the Dutch frontman turned home from close range. 

Young doubled United's advantage shortly before the hour mark. He cut inside from the left flank, burst forward and unleashed a fine 25-yard shot from distance as United became the first club to bag 1,000 Premier League home points.

Supporters left Old Trafford with a smile on their face as Moyes' men look to kick on following this hugely important league win.
