Speculation linking Wayne Rooney with a sensational switch to Chelsea has resurfaced, as press reports claim Manchester United have not made efforts to tie the on-form frontman down to a new contract.

Jose Mourinho’s side failed in their efforts to sign the player over the summer, with a bid thought to be in the region of £25million rebuffed.

United’s refusal to sell the striker has proved hugely important on the pitch, with Rooney’s impressive form a shining light in a largely mediocre season to date.

However, as Rooney heads towards 150 league goals in a Red Devils jersey, fresh reports claim that Chelsea are preparing a renewed attempt to sign the striker, with the Mirror alleging that no progress has been made between player and United in relation to a new contract.

The 26-year-old’s current deal is set to run until June 2015, and many may have expected news in relation to a new agreement following the intense speculation which existed over the summer months concerning his future. 

Reporting on Rooney’s decision to remain at United in August, for example, the Telegraph indicated that the player would be offered the chance to extend his contract before the end of 2013 "if he continues to show his commitment".

With United sitting ninth in the Premier League and failing to impress on the pitch, any reports linking the club's top performer away from the club are a cause for real concern.
