Manchester United left Real Sociedad with a valuable point but missed a penalty and had Marouane Fellaini sent off for two bookable offences in a game which was not one which will live in the memory for too long. The visitors dominated the first half but lacked penetration up front. Wayne Rooney and Janier Hernandez worked hard but an easy chance missed by the Mexican international in the second half was typical of the evening.

Van Persie and Ashley Young replaced Rooney and Hernandez in the second half however the Dutch striker missed a penalty which was turned against the post by the home goalkeeper.

Many nuetrals will say that justice was done as the award of the spotkick was fortuitous to say the least.

The results in the group mean that everything is the same - both games ended 0-0. United now have eight points from four games and one more win will seeem them progress into the next round.

The game marked Ryan Giggs's ninth match this season which took him to a total of 950 Manchester United appearances, just over three weeks away from his 40th birthday.
