Clint Dempsey rescued a point for Tottenham Hotspur as United fell just seconds short of victory at White Hart Lane following a hugely impressive defensive display. In snowy conditions in North London, Robin van Persie continued his sensational goalscoring form with a first-half header, but United let their lead slip in the dying seconds as Dempsey turned home from close range. 

In a game which had looked in doubt due to the snow, United were seconds away from a fine away win with RVP’s 25th minute goal putting the visitors ahead.

Danny Welbeck found Tom Cleverley, and the England midfielder swung a fine cross to RVP, who fired home a superb header to cap a clinical attacking move.

Tottenham often threatened – especially after half-time – but United continued to frustrate their North London opponents with a superb display of collective defending, with David De Gea pulling off a string of impressive saves.

However, Spurs found the equalising goal with only seconds remaining as Dempsey poked the ball home in a crowded penalty area, denying United a fifth league win on the bounce.

The hosts had 15 goal attempts to United’s 4 – but De Gea was on fine form, with saves from Defoe and Dempsey key highlights – but he couldn’t keep out the US international's last-gasp equaliser.  

Spurs were worthy of a point – but United will feed hard done by not to have been awarded a penalty after substitute Wayne Rooney was fouled by Steven Caulker shortly after coming off the bench.

The result keeps leaves United five points clear at the top of the Premier League, with an FA Cup fourth round clash at home to Fulham next up for United.
