Cluj claimed a famous Champions League win at Old Trafford, but missed out on qualification to the knockout stages to Galatasary. An incredible strike from Luis Alberto secured their win over a much-changed United side, but Paulo Sergio's men must settle for a place in the Europa League. 

Wayne Rooney was the only survivor from the XI that won 4-3 at Reading as Sir Alex Ferguson made a host of changes for United's final Champions League group stage fixture of the season. 

After securing early qualification with four consecutive victories, the Scotsman has shuffled his pack for United's final two group games - and consecutive 1-0 defeats have tainted the Red's European form book.

The only goal of the game came on 56 minutes as Alberto picked up the ball just inside the United half, surged forward unchallenged and unleashed an amazing long-range effort beyond the reach of goalkeeper David De Gea.

United enjoyed much possession in the closing stages of the game, but lacked a cutting edge in attack, to the disappointment of the majority of a 71,521 crowd.

The result means the Red Devils suffered their first Champions League defeat at the Theatre of Dreams since November 2009, when Beskitas won 1-0. The result ends a 13-match unbeaten home run in the competition for United.

For Cluj, they face the Europa League as second-half Galatasary goals denied them qualification to the knockout stages. They, however, will take heart from this impressive result - which is only United's second defeat at Old Trafford this season.
