City fail to pull clear of United as Black Cats win

Fierce rivals Manchester City missed out on the opportunity to pull clear at the top of the Premier League with defeat at Sunderland, remaining level on points with United. Martin O’Neill’s men grabbed an injury-time winner through Ji Dong-won as the Black Cats extended their unbeaten league run to three games. 

Dong-won turned the ball home three minutes into stoppage time as Sunderland became only the second team this season to beat the league leaders.

The Korean substitute bagged the winning goal with the final kick of the game, in a contest which saw Edin Dzeko and Micah Richards go close for the visitors.

O’Neill has now won three matches out of five since taking over the reigns at Sunderland, lifting the Black Cats to 13th in the table.

Sunderland’s surprise victory means City remain level on points with United at the top of the table, with only a better goal difference keeping the Eastlands club at the top.

United return to action on Wednesday at Newcastle, whilst City entertain Liverpool on Tuesday evening.
