Giggs scores winner

A controversial penalty won by Manchester United after only 31 seconds was the difference as the Red Devils heaped misery on Kenny Dalglish's Liverpool. Ryan Giggs duly dispatched the spot-kick in a game which saw Steven Gerrard dismissed for a shocking challenge on Michael Carrick.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men have now lost only one of 31 competitive fixtures this season following Sunday's third round win over bitter rivals Liverpool.

Dalglish's reign as manager of the Scousers started with defeat as Giggs drilled home the only goal of the game during the matches' very early exchanges.

Hot-form frontman Dimitar Berbatov tumbled in the box as United strung together an early attack. Daniel Agger was adjudged to have tripped the Bulgarian by referee Howard Webb and Giggs kept his cool to break the deadlock.

To their credit, the troubled Scousers fought back well - but the dismissal of Gerrard on the half-hour mark dented their hopes of an unlikely comeback.

He made a dangerous two-footed challenge with studs showing on Carrick and was given his marching orders by Webb.

After their early goal, United were not playing at full tilt - though the advantage was nearly doubled on the stroke of the interval as Jonny Evans' header rattled the woodwork.

The chances came thick and fast after the break as the hosts looked for a killer second goal. Javier Hernandez and Berbatov went close before Pepe Reina pulled off three excellent saves in quick succession.

Liverpool's 'keeper denied Rafael, Berbatov and Patrice Evra as the hosts missed an ideal opportunity to go two goals to the good. United also saw a decent shout for a second penalty waved away as home nerves started to set in.

Despite their resilience, however, Liverpool failed to carve out many opportunities and seemed resigned to a spirited defeat at the death.

Their 9,000 travelling fans may point to the Dalglish factor in helping to secure a slightly improved display; but the seven time FA Cup winners should always have been especially motivated for this one.

Attentions now return to the Premier League for United with a televised encounter at Spurs next Sunday.

Another shocking bad performance from us. We just seem to be stuck in 2ng gear constantly.

No spark, no bite, nothing.

Jesus we had Liverpool by the gonads today o give them a right good trouncing and pile on the misery, and we scraped by with a 1-0.

Love beating them, but how bad we're playing against this relegation fodder is depressing me.

Agree, I can't believe we are top. I thought there were some signs of life in us a few weeks ago but we are back to a lazy team lacking in creativity.

Nice to see Gerrard sent packing after his howler penalty the other day!

The only satisfying thing is that we have now put to bed the 3 game mauling we suffered by them

Surprised to see such criticism all. Admittedly, we are not playing sparkling football – but our run of form was fantastic; and given he circumstances this was always going to be a difficult game and the priority was to win.

crticism was aimed at the team and performances in general, the future potential of this squad AND the fact that we only won due to a potentially dubious pen and were not able to score in open play albeit we did create a lot more chances.

not only that pat, but we were playing a team with no confidence, no form, no belief and it was at home.

Missing so many guilt edge chances will come back to us if we dont improve
