Manchester United surrendered a two-goal lead as West Bromwich Albion secured a famous comeback at Old Trafford. Despite leading 2-0 at the interval, an own goal from Patrice Evra and a howler from Edwin van der Sar allowed the Baggies to battle back for a deserved point.

Sir Alex Ferguson left Wayne Rooney on the bench as the Baggies travelled from the Midlands to the Theatre of Dreams.

United entered the game as overwhelming favourites and looked on course for a comfortable three points as they took a two-goal advantage into the interval.

Javier Hernandez pounced on a loose ball to fire the Red Devils in front before Nani's neat finish doubled the advantage.

However, the Baggies showed great spirit after the interval. A Chris Brunt free-kick deflected off Evra and into his own net, before a VDS shocker allowed Somen Tchoyi to restore parity.

United's veteran Dutch 'keeper spilled a tame Brunt cross into the goalmouth and the Cameroonian poked the ball home.

Sir Alex introduced Rooney from the bench with 19 minutes remaining - but the out-of-sorts England frontman failed to have a significant impact, with the Baggies threatening a dramatic late winner at times.

The result leaves United third in the Premier League table with fourteen points from eight outings. The press look certain to raise questions regarding United's silverware credentials as Ferguson's men stutter to a third successive league draw.
