New contract

He was considered a bizarre signing, but Ritchie de Laet is confident that he has a big, big future at Old Trafford. The Belgian defender has penned a new three-year deal with the club and has been told he's very close to regular first-team football. Danny Welbeck has also signed a new deal.

Youngster de Laet told the Belgian press that it'd "take weeks to recover from the shock" after United snapped him up from Stoke last January.

He was signed on the recommendation of Warren Joyce, United's reserve-team assistant boss, and has adapted well to life at Old Trafford.

De Laet failed to make a single appearance at Stoke and made just three appearances on loan at Wrexham, but was given the chance to impress at United. It's a chance that the youngster has snapped up, and he has now put pen-to-paper on a three year deal.

"Alex Ferguson told me I'm very close to the first team." said the versatile defender.

"There has been talk of me going out on loan but Sir Alex said I can't leave as he may need me. The new contract is a surprise and fantastic news."

18-year-old frontman Welbeck is also on the verge of a four-year deal, and will reportedly earn in excess of £10,000-per-week.

Good news - he's a solid player, and being able to play all along the back 4 is a plus.
