Despite banking £83.5million from sales this summer, Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he will not be making any more signings during this transfer window. United have spent little over £20million on Antonio Valencia and Gabriel Obertan; whilst Michael Owen joined the club on a free transfer.

Fans have been left alarmed by the news that Ferguson will not be spending any more cash this summer.

Despite the loss of Carlos Tevez, Cristiano Ronaldo's £80million move to Real Madrid and Frazier Campbell's £3.5million move to Sunderland, the United boss will not spend anymore than the £20million he has splashed out thus far.

"It is the end of our business," said Sir Alex. "Stories about who we are supposed to be getting - forget it."

It's easy to emphasise with Ferguson. Clubs are almost certain to inflate their asking prices for players after United banked a world-record fee following Ronaldo's move. The United boss does not want to be held to ransom and is happy to make do with what he has.

However, the squad now looks slightly weaker than it did this time last season. The club have lost two of their biggest names and a promising striker. In their place comes a huge gamble in Owen, a French winger in Obertan who is unlikely to become an immediate first-team player and a versatile winger in Valencia who only has a few of years of top-flight experience.

The press will continue to link United with a host of big-money signings; but Fergie suggests that there will no further moves as preparations continue for the new season.
