Evans celebrates

No fewer than eleven Manchester United stars have been in international action over the weekend. Jonny Evans captured many of the headlines with a crucial strike in Northern Ireland’s 3-2 qualifying victory over Poland, whilst Wayne Rooney hit the target for England in a 4-0 friendly win over the Slovakians at Wembley.

Northern Ireland 3-2 Poland

Northern Ireland top Group C in the World Cup qualifiers following a crucial victory over Poland at Windsor Park.

Warren Feeney broke the deadlock before the Poles equalised against the run of play. Evans then put the hosts back ahead after the interval before a comical own-goal - thanks to some terrible goalkeeping from Artur Boruc - handed the Ulsterman a two-goal advantage.

A late Polish goal proved mere consolation as Nigel Worthington's men claimed a result that gives them a real opportunity of qualifying for the South Africa 2010 finals.

England 4-0 Slovakia

Rooney capped a fine performance with two late goals as United swept Slovakia aside by four goals to nil. Emile Heskey and Frank Lampard also hit the net as Fabio Capello's claimed a morale-boosting win.

Ben Foster played the second-half in goal for England as he replaced David James at the break, whilst Michael Carrick played the final sixteen minutes. There was, however, no place for Rio Ferdinand has he withdrew with a groin complaint.

Ex-Reds midfielder David Beckham produced a fine display as he capped his record-breaking 109th appearance with an excellent performance. The United legend, currently on loan at AC Milan, is now the most-capped outfield player in the history of the England national side.

Argentina 4-0 Venezuela

Diego Maradona's first home game in charge of the two-time World Cup winnings was a convincing four-goal home victory. Lionel Messi broke the deadlock before United's frontman Carlos Tevez doubled the home side's advantage shortly after the interval. Maxi Rodriguez and Sergio Aguero capped a fine attacking display from the South Americans.

Republic of Ireland 1-1 Bulgaria

Irish boss Giovanni Trappatoni was delighted that United's target-man forward was ruled out through injury - but his side still failed to claim maximum points against the Bulgarians. Reds defender John O'Shea set-up Richard Dunne's opener, but the visitors restored parity in the closing stages courtesy of a Kevin Kilbane own-goal.

Lithuania 0-1 France

Patrice Evra played the full ninety minutes at left-back as the French claimed a nervy away win. Franck Ribery, a player who has been linked with an Old Trafford move in the past, bagged the only goal of the game as the French climbed to third in Pool G - one place and two points behind the Lithuanians.

Netherlands 3-0 Scotland

There were no heroics for the Scots in Holland. Darren Fletcher was in action as the World Cup qualification hopes were dealt a blow with a three-goal defeat. Goals from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Robin Van Persie and Dirk Kuyt made it a routine win for the men in orange.

Portugal 0-0 Sweden

Cristiano Ronaldo, named captain, and Nani were in action as Sweden frustrated the Portuguese for ninety minutes. Carlos Queiroz's side have stuttered to six points from their opening five qualification matches as the pressure mounts on the former Manchester United assistant.

South Korea 2-1 Iraq

Ji-Sung Park was in action for the South Koreans in a 2-1 friendly win over Iraq. The hosts dominated proceedings at the Suwon World Cup Stadium but still had to come from behind to claim the win.

Old habits die hard Chris, I think you might mean "as England swept Slovakia aside" not united. Wishfull thinking?

Did anyone see the Tevez for Argentina? He took his goal well and played a beautiful ball through for Messi to score.

How sh.it are Portugal? They are really struggling to make it to the WC now.
