Manchester United claimed a crucial win at Upton Park on Saturday evening to return to the Premier League summit. The Red Devils had slipped to second after Liverpool’s 3-2 win at Portsmouth’s Fratton Park, but a fine strike from Ryan Giggs after 62 minutes has put United back on top.

United were not at their best - but sealed the points thanks to a beautiful finish from Giggs just after the hour mark.

The Hammers battled well for long periods but United usually looked more threatening. Cristiano Ronaldo saw an effort palmed away by Robert Green before the most decorated player in English league football settled the contest.

The Welshman continued his record of scoring in every single Premier League season by curling home a fine left-footed drive from just inside the penalty box.

United are two-points clear of the Scousers and still hold a crucial game-in-hand. Attentions now turn to the F.A Cup with the Reds looking ahead to another trip to Derby next weekend.
