World Champions

10-man Manchester United crowned themselves champions of the world following a well-deserved 1-0 win over Liga de Quito on Sunday. A crisp finish from Wayne Rooney late-on was enough to seal the contest at Yokohama's International Stadium despite Nemanja Vidic’s red-card. We’re officially the finest club on the face of the planet!

We are the Champions, Champions of the World!

Manchester United became the first club to win FIFA's World Club Cup with a deserved 1-0 win over LDU Quito.

A superb strike from Rooney with 73 minutes on the clock was enough to seal the silverware for the 10-man United.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men had dominated the opening period but were frustrated by a series of saves from impressive Quito ‘keeper Jose Cevallos.

The Ecuadorians went close when Jairo Campos somehow flicked Alejandro Manso's free-kick wide, but, aside from that, all the first-half chances came United's way. Rooney and Tevez both went close, whilst Ronaldo's sparkiling footwork dazzled a packed house in Yokahoma.

The South Americans started to make a mark on the game after half-time, thanks mainly to the 49^th-minute dismissal of Vidic. The Serb foolishly lashed out at Claudio Bieler with an elbow and was immediately shown red by referee Ravshan Irmatov.

With a man advantage, Quito started to show some of the attacking flair that helped them win the 2008 Copa Libertadores and Edwin van der Sar was called into action on a handful of occasions.

However, United remained the better side and deservedly broke the deadlock with seventeen minutes left. Ronaldo found Rooney with a neat pass and the England striker curled home a superb finish from the left-hand corner of the penalty area. Fantastic.

Quito threatened late-on and United had to defend a handful of corners - but we held on to deservedly win the crown of the world's finest football club.

Manchester United - World Champions. A truly great honour.

Just add this as well First English club to win the European Cup. The first English Club to do the treble. The First English cup to win the old World Championship - head to head between the winners of the Champions League and the Copa Libatores and now the first English club to win the FIFA World Championship.

As laudatory as those other achievements last season were, dont get me wrong, I thave a sneaking suspicion all of you would have preferred your team didnt fly to Japan for possibly the most meaningless tournament in professional football.

We'll wait and see in the next couple of weeks if it has any effect or not. By the looks of it just now it hasn't done much harm with everyone tripping over each other. Xmas is always our time to shine and this year will be no exception.

A bit of envy perhaps at losing to Sao Paulo in 2005 and not becoming world champions yourselves? I would probably have agreed with you had you, Chelsea and Arsenal not blown it.

We beat Fulham and Wigan with our games in hand and we're 1 point behind, so no real harm done plus we came back from Japan with the world championship, no injuries, 5 day break.

Dont get me wrong i know that htat isnt a good indication of a world championship and that most top teams in europe can beat that opposition but it is what it is and im proud that we were their and Chelsea werent.

We still beat what was in front of us while we were away and all the title contenders lost points. So, on balance, as it turned out we are very happy. THe acid test as far as the trip goes will be Stoke on boxing day IMO

We've returned to Manchester in a superb position.
A couple of wins will put us right up there.
We are at risk of fixture congestion, however, with the F.A Cup tie at Southampton and two games against Derby County coming up.
