The British Broadcasting Corporation will honour Sir Bobby Charlton on Sunday with the 2008 BBC Sports Personality's Lifetime Achievement. The 71-year-old Red Devils legend, now a director at Old Trafford, has had a glittering career including the World Cup win in 1966 with England and the European Cup triumph with United in 1968.

One of the greatest-ever attacking midfield players, Charlton will be awarded the gong by his brother Jack during the broadcast of Sunday's BBC Sports Personality of the Year show.

He will also be joined be fellow survivors of the 1958 Munich Air Disaster in what is certain to be an emotional presentation.

The award is in recognition of 50-years of service which Charlton has devoted to the beautiful game.

Charlton made an incredible 758 appearances for United - only bettered recently by Ryan Giggs. He's the top scorer in United history with an astonishing 249 strikes, and also the highest-scoring England player in history with 49 goals.

His career honours include a World Cup, ten British Championships, three Football League crowns, an F.A Cup and a European Cup - as well as the Ballon d'Or and Football Writers' Player of the Year in 1966.

After leaving Old Trafford, he had a short-spell as player/manager of Preston, before joining Waterford United and later going onto act as caretaker-manager of Wigan Athletic.

He is still heavily involved in football - acting as a football director and ambassador for Manchester United. He has also done plenty of charity work and helped promote Manchester's bids for the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games, as well as the successful bid for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
