Manchester United’s European Cup group-stage campaign ended with a disappointing 2-2 draw at home to Aalborg – but the result still proved enough to top the pool. Carlos Tevez had given United the lead, but the Danes stunned Old Trafford with an impressive fightback before Wayne Rooney equalised after half-time.

A weakened United side got off to the perfect start as Tevez latched onto a neat pass from Ryan Giggs and fired the European champions ahead.

However, Uefa Cup-bound Aalborg showed huge courage as they took advantage of a below-par United performance to turn the game on its head before half-time.

Michael Jakobsen headed home on 31 minutes to restore parity, before Jeppe Curth edged the visitors ahead on the stroke of half-time.

Wayne Rooney fired United level seven minutes after the break but Aalborg defended bravely to hold on for a famous point. Fortunately, Celtic's 2-0 win over Villarreal means that United still top the group.
