Ninety minutes of frustration turned into an ecstatic sense of relief as Nemanja Vidic handed United a 1-0 win over Sunderland in the dying seconds. Rocked by the sudden departure of Roy Keane, the Black Cats produced a determined defensive display but were undone in the final seconds.

Vidic settled the contest in injury-time as he made a rare surge forward and drilled home after Michael Carrick's effort had smashed back off the post.

The goal was met by scenes of joy and relief across Old Trafford. For a change, the team were treated to a superb atmosphere throughout the contest and Vidic's unlikely strike prompted mass celebration on the terraces.

United controlled the game for long periods with Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo Dimitar Berbatov and Anderson all going close.

However, led by former Reds reserve-boss Ricky Sbragia, the Black Cats looked on the verge of frustrating United following a spirited defensive display before Vidic struck. They will be gutted with the game's outcome - but responded superbly to Keane's resignation.
